The Top 3 Methods for
Managing Stress Now
by Shannon K. Spellman, M.S.W.
If you're like most people, when you
feel stressed out you need an immediate solution. Many of the stress
management methods we teach and encourage require commitment and time,
both of which can add to your already overloaded schedule and initially
serve to increase your stress rather than decreasing it. Here are three
tips you can apply right now this minute.
First, take a few really slow, deep
breaths. This is the number one method for reducing stress for your body,
your mind, and your emotions. An inability to manage stress can cause an
increased heart rate and rising blood pressure.. By breathing in and
exhaling deeply and slowly, you can actually reduce your heart rate and
your blood pressure too. In the process, even if you don't purposefully
change your thoughts, by focusing on your breathing instead of your
stress, you quiet your mind. Focused breaths are also soothing to your
emotions, calming you down, and reducing your stress.
Second, try some light gentle
tapping with your fingertips all over your head. Stress gets locked in
your body and is often trapped in your mind and by tapping on your head
your release tension both physically and mentally resulting in calming
your emotions.
And third, choose just one course of
action to tackle your stress that will help you feel more in charge. This
may mean being assertive and saying no, or it may mean not engaging and
remaining silent. It could be to accomplish one task that needs done. It
could mean taking a hot bath or a shower to refresh yourself. There is no
one answer that works for everybody. Pick one thing that you know works
for you and do that right now this minute.
