Learning to Go With
The Flow
by Shannon K. Spellman, M.S.W.
The term "going with the flow" is
most easily understood when we watch water currents or wind directions. If
we go against the current, it is harder. Life is like that. Whenever
we become strong willed and attempt to go against the current, we make
life harder for ourselves.
It is often difficult to trust the
Universe to carry us in the best direction when the flow appears to be
going the other direction from where we think we ought to be. Yet, failing
to do so, usually results in a great deal of frustration and the eventual
defeat of having to accept reality as it us rather than the way we think
it ought to be.
It is my experience, and that of
many others, that often the flow is really exactly as it should be and
that there are reasons it's not flowing in the direction of our choice.
Remembering that in times of struggle is the trick to adjusting to life.
Returning to it after a struggle is the acceptance of our humanness.
In order to learn to go with the
flow, try this simple experiment. The next time you hear the winds howling
fiercely, over 50 mph winds, go outside and face the wind. Try walking
forward. Now try it with an armful of newspaper (make sure you can run
fast to catch it all so you don't litter). Now do the same experiment only
this time turn around and walk in the same direction as the wind.
Feel the difference? This can be how differently life feels if you apply
it to everyday situations. The more practiced at this you become, the less
stressed you'll be.
